An 18-year-old woman who drove into a South Dallas home Wednesday said it was her first time behind the wheel of a vehicle and that she fled the scene out of fear.

In an exclusive interview with WFAA at the Dallas County Jail, Maleasha King apologized for the crash, which injured a pregnant mother just before noon in the 1300 block of Peabody Avenue.

King said her sister-in-law, a passenger inside the SUV at the time of the crash, was teaching her to drive on Forest Lane when she lost control and panicked. The SUV flew off the road and into the home, where five people, including three children, were inside.

The SUV struck a sofa, where the pregnant mother was sitting with her 1-year-old child. The impact pushed the mother across the room and into the kitchen, where she was pinned against a wall. She was taken to the hospital with a broken pelvis and head wound. No one else was injured, including the 1-year-old child.

Officials said the vehicle was speeding.

King, who lives only blocks from the crash, fled the scene but was apprehended when she returned about two hours later.

Her arrest warrant stated that she told police she was pregnant and bleeding. She was taken to the hospital where she was deemed not pregnant and released to police custody, the warrant stated.

She was booked into the Dallas County jail. She is charged with causing an accident involving serious bodily injury and her bond was set at $25,000. Her passenger stayed at the scene and was not arrested, the warrant stated.
