North Texas Airman to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery

Captain Mark Weber was killed alongside six other service members when their HH-60 Pave Hawk crashed near the city of Al-Qa'im in Iraq.

BARTONVILLE—An Air Force Captain with roots in North Texas will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery as military officials investigate the chopper crash that took his life.

According to the Department of Defense, Captain Mark Weber was killed last Thursday alongside six other service members when their HH-60 Pave Hawk crashed near the city of Al-Qa'im in Iraq.

The Pentagon says the crash doesn’t appear to be caused by enemy activity and is under investigation.

Weber, 29, grew up in the Denton area and his parents still live in Bartonville.

They told WFAA that they recently met with Vice President Mike Pence and that their son will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery soon.

On Wednesday, a memorial service was held yesterday for Weber at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia. It’s there where Weber was assigned to the 38th Rescue Squadron.

Weber was a Combat Rescue Officer, meaning he would help evacuate servicemen wounded or immobile on the front lines.

He graduated from the US Air Force Academy and received a football scholarship to play there after graduating from Guyer High School in Denton.

However, his family says his playing career was cut short due to an injury.

Guyer Football Coach John Walsh said that Weber was the school’s first football player to receive a D1 scholarship.

Football boosters say they plan to cement Weber’s legacy by offering a scholarship in his name.
