DALLAS – At the corner of South Ewing and Georgia streets in Oak Cliff, there's a new business working to make a difference.
Recipe Oak Cliff has positioned itself in a neighborhood where there are not many healthy food options.
“Right now we are calling it a food security house because we are in the middle of a food desert," said business owner Tisha Crear.
Inside Recipe Oak Cliff, Crear and her staff spend the day whipping up fresh juices and organic food menu items. They’re specializing in offering options most neighbors say are not readily accessible in the 75216 zip code.
Barista Audrie Mills said, ”We can come and get fresh drinks because all of the juices and smoothies are made fresh here. And she has food alternatives to having just fast food.”
The quaint and cozy juice bar and deli serves up flavorful vegan dishes. Mills says the impact in the community has been tremendous, so far.
“I get pleasure out of letting people try things that they otherwise wouldn’t try and be amazed at how good it tastes,” Mills explained. "And it’s all plant based.”
Crear says her vision for Recipe Oak Cliff grew out of holding pop-up shops in parking lots across Oak Cliff and South Dallas.
The business got start-up assistance from The Real Estate Council Community Funds Program. Maggie Parker is the Community Funds Manager.
"We’re really looking to be the lender where if a traditional bank isn’t willing to go there, than we are trying to get into those projects and get our members involved and see how we can support economic development," Parker said.
That kind of support and partnership has been a game-changer for Recipe Oak Cliff and about a dozen other businesses, so far.
"We really want to see southern Dallas, as well as all of Dallas, grow," Parker said. "And I think having really grassroots efforts is key to making it happen.”
The workers at Recipe Oak Cliff say their model shows offering healthy food options can be successful.
Recipe Oak Cliff is open Wednesday through Sunday.
