Is this the beginning of the change that so many say is coming to Texas?

NEWSMAKER

Inside Texas Politics began with two newly elected Democrats who will represent North Texas when the House and Senate reconvene in January. Rhetta Andrews Bowers is state representative-elect for House District 113 – the seat vacated by Republican Cindy Burkett. And Nathan Johnson is state senator-elect who defeated Republican Don Huffines in Dallas. The two talked with host Jason Whitely and Bud Kennedy from the Star-Telegram.

STATEWIDE

In less than two months, the Texas legislature will gavel back into session. A dozen new Democrats will go to Austin – almost half of them are from North Texas. Ross Ramsey, co-founder and executive editor of the Texas Tribune, joined host Jason Whitely to discuss how the new Democrats will affect the selection of a new speaker. Ross and Jason also talked about the Republicans losing eight of 13 seats to Democrats on appellate courts in North Texas.

MY VOICE, MY OPINION

For more than a year now, WFAA has asked questions about the integrity of mail-in ballots. The Dallas County District Attorney is said to be investigating whether people are abusing them. In this week’s My Voice, My Opinion, contributor Cydney Walker, from Coffee and Politics 101, said, despite Dallas being solidly Democratic, both parties benefit from this method of voting.

Jennifer Cho, vice president of Weber Shandwick, joined host Jason Whitely to discuss a study produced by Weber Shandwick. Weber Shandwick is a global marketing and communications agency with offices throughout Texas. The study showed that 93 percent of Americans say civility is a problem is the United States today.

FLASHPOINT

In last week’s midterm election, Democrats dominated Dallas County, and they also turned Tarrant County blue. Is this the beginning of the change that so many say is coming to Texas? Flashpoint debated that question in this week’s Flashpoint. From the right, Wade Emmert a former Dallas County Republican Party chair. And from the left, LULAC's National President Domingo Garcia.

Reporters Roundtable puts the headlines in perspective each week. Ross Ramsey and Bud Kennedy returned along with Berna Dean Steptoe, WFAA’s political producer. Ross, Bud, and Berna Dean discussed whether women were voting for Democrats or Democratic candidate Congressman Beto O’Rourke in last week’s midterm election. The three journalists also discussed how incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz eked out a win over Congressman O’Rourke.
