IRVING -- Irving ISD will soon be offering full-day, tuition-based pre-kindergarten for Irving residents.

The district will offer the classes at its three early childhood schools in the district.

Children must be four years old on or before Sept.1, 2016 to qualify for the 2016-2017 school year.

"Our full-day Pre-K classes will give students a strong foundation for reading, writing and problem solving. When students step out of Pre-K in the spring, they are prepared for the academic and social expectations of school,” said Irving ISD Superintendent Jose L. Parra in a written statement.

School officials say the cost of the program -- $100 weekly -- is competitive with local private schools and day care facilities.

The district says space is limited, so classes may fill up fast.

Enrollment in the full-day, tuition-based Pre-K will be done on a first-come, first-served basis.

Irving ISD will continue to operate its half-day Pre-K classes at no cost for students who qualify.

Pre-enrollment for the expanded pre-kindergarten program is now open.
