Dallas lost one of its most prominent philanthropists this weekend.

Ruth Altshuler died Friday night. Raised money for the Goodwill, Salvation Army and United Way and others, she dedicated her life to non-profits and civic causes in this city.

And five years ago, Altshuler led the team that put together the city's 50th commemoration of JFK's assassination.

Altshuler was 93.

Southern Methodist University sent the following statement:

Dallas and SMU have lost a leadership giant. Our hearts are heavy, but our spirits are brightened by the memory of Ruth. She was a one-of-a-kind dynamo, who got things done for the betterment of all. She forever improved Dallas and the University she so dearly loved.

Jennifer Sampson, of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, described Altshuler as a generous community leader.

We at United Way of Metropolitan Dallas are heartbroken about the loss of our beloved friend and generous community leader. Ruth Altshuler’s legacy and impact will live on forever. She’s touched countless hearts and lives, and will be greatly missed.

A memorial service is planned for next Thursday at Highland Park United Methodist Church on Mockingbird Lane.
