WFAA partners with United to Learn to launch September learning initiative

United to Learn, a Dallas nonprofit that uses community partnerships to improve academic achievement in schools, will receive a grant from the TEGNA Foundation.

DALLAS — Back to school is in full swing!

WFAA is partnering with United to Learn, a Dallas non-profit, on an exciting learning initiative for September.

United to Learn brings together community partners to accelerate student achievement across Dallas ISD elementary schools.

As WFAA's 2022 advocacy campaign partner, United to Learn will receive a TEGNA Foundation grant to support its work with Dallas ISD.

"With a mission of changing lives by transforming the relationship between schools and community, United to Learn is an education nonprofit with a proven model for mobilizing community partners to close opportunity gaps among our public elementary schools, as well as the awareness gaps across our community," according to United to Learn's website.

United to Learn's approach focuses on four Dallas ISD-aligned pillars.

  1. Improve elementary schools’ social-emotional health
  2. Create more aspirational learning environments
  3. Support greater literacy student achievement, and
  4. Develop an informed community empowered to advocate for educational equity from a culturally competent perspective.

Elementary students thriving with guidance from high schoolers

Every student at Nathan Adams Elementary in Dallas has big dreams and even bigger obstacles.

The school is in a high poverty area, and more than half the students can’t read at grade level.

So, to help students down the road, they looked down the road. Less than a mile away, many students at W.T. White High School’s Collegiate Academy want to be teachers.

The Cesar Chavez campus is a safe space in what is sometimes a tough place.

Just northeast of downtown Dallas, 95% of students here live in poverty and crime is close.

Teachers at Chavez know students don’t always arrive each day feeling safe, so they have to teach that feeling scared and mad and sad is normal.

'House System' helping build elementary friendships, competition and future leaders

Friendly competition and constant encouragement can both go a long way. And they are part of the successful mix at a southern Dallas elementary school, where a "wheel of fortune" type spinning wheel in the hallway has its place in that budding success story, too.
