With Christmas coming up, some say it’s the most wonderful time of the year. But for the homeless, winter holidays might mean something else.
Finding warmth and something to eat may be physical issues, but the joy of the season could turn into depression. The Stewpot at the First Presbyterian Church of Dallas offers services to individuals at risk of homelessness. They’re known for helping the hungry, but they also offer an art program.
For the students at Stewpot, art is an escape. Misty, who goes by "Mystery" with her art buddies, is one of their students. She lives on the streets but is looking for a place.
“Dallas’ homeless people and population, we needed something like this,” she said. “When I found out there’s a program to help you develop skills such as painting and different things... I came over and said, ‘That’s for me.’”
Now, these students can use their art to help themselves with more than their state of mind. They’re showing their work at the Bradshaw Gallery at the Downtown Dallas Public Library starting this Sunday, Dec. 3 from 1:30-4 p.m. through January.
Admission is free and open to the public. Ninety percent of the proceeds go the artists and 10 percent goes to the program.
