AUSTIN - The Texas Army National Guard said sunday that two soldiers from the 143rd Infantry Detachment in Austin were killed Friday in Afghanistan.

A statement from the Guard said Staff Sgt. Chris Neal Staats, 32, of Fredricksburg and Spc. Anthony Gabriel Green, 28, of Matthews, North Carolina, died when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Wardak Province.

The Guard said two other soldiers - Major John J. Ploch and Sgt. Todd L. Plybon - were wounded in the attack, but are expected to survive.

"The Texas National Guard family mourns the deaths of these dear friends and brave Soldiers and extends its deepest sympathy to family members and friends," the Guard's statement said. "They are in our hearts and prayers."
