Police are investigating the death of a former Plano Senior High School student who died over the weekend after he fell or jumped out of a taxi near Austin.

Authorities said Jeffrey Weng, a junior studying music at the University of Texas, and another man took a taxi from Austin early Saturday morning headed toward San Marcos. But Weng either jumped or fell out of the taxi as it traveled on Interstate 35 in Kyle, said police spokesman Captain Pedro Hernandez.

After the cab driver realized Weng was no longer in the car, he turned around and found a sheriff's deputy already at the scene. The driver then left to drop off the other passenger in San Marcos, police said. Kyle police detectives are trying to determine the identity of the second passenger.

"We would have preferred for the cab driver not to have continued on to San Marcos," Hernandez said. "That would have definitely made the investigation a little easier for our officers."< /p>

Paramedics took Weng to a nearby hospital, where his family decided to remove him from life support Sunday evening.

Friends said they're having trouble coping with Weng's death.

"Part of what is hard for everyone, including me, is not knowing the exact circumstances of what happened," said 20-year-old Jordan Schmittou, who met Weng almost six years ago in Plano. "I think it's hard for people to get a sense of closure."

Friends have planned a candlelight vigil Friday night at Plano Senior High School.
