Dallas craftsman Arthur Porter has a passion for the creative arts that he wants to share with others. Housed in the artists' quarter of South Side on Lamar, Porter has come a long way from his days as a self-taught craftsman working in his home perfecting his technique of selecting leather, designing templates and creating chaps, belts and bags.
Today, he has realized his dream of launching his own shop, Red Horse Chaps, and has created a nonprofit organization, Designing Dreams, to accomplish his mission of helping others develop their talents. The South Side shop has become a hub for aspiring artists who share Arthur's passion for creating one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items.
"The excitement of taking a garment or product from a dream to a finished product is what motivated me to hone my skills in sewing and embellishing leather," said Porter. "I've discovered there are many others in Dallas who are equally as motivated to tap into their creative talents." In his own leather accessory work, Porter combines artistry and high fashion design to create leather belts, chaps, bags, guitar straps and home accessories. The pieces are hand-stitched and adorned with crystals, studs, beads, fringes, and overlays.
Porter's leather chaps have won him back-to-back blue ribbons in the State Fair of Texas' Creative Arts Craftsman competition. In making his products, Porter says he strives for elegance and originality in each creation. "My ideal customer is one who is not afraid to turn heads by wearing accessories created to attract attention and create buzz," he says.
His leatherwork extends to home accessories such as table runners, napkins and placemats as featured in Dallas Home Design magazine. His belts have been featured in D Magazine.
Word of his skill at creating bags, belts, chaps and other products has spread and with every passing week, more aspiring artisans are taking advantage of his one-on-one classes.
For over two years, Porter has worked diligently toward becoming a self-supporting artist. What really excites him is the nonprofit organization he has launched to extend his dream to the next generation of aspiring artists. He formed Designing Dreams to share with others his philosophy that dreams really can come true. Through the nonprofit, he has involved other artisans in a Second Saturday artists' market, worked with young designers in Dallas ISD and formed partnerships with the El Centro College fashion design program.
He is most proud of the growing cadre of young fashionistas who are learning his craft and catching his passion for making and marketing handmade leather accessories. Launched in 2006, the Young Entrepreneurs program features hands-on Saturday classes that challenge the students to design, create and market their own products.
"These young people as young as 10 never fail to amaze me with their fearlessness and bold dreams of success. I began this venture thinking I would inspire the next generation, but I have found myself more inspired by them," he said.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Porter is continuing to dream about the future. His plans call for a full-service artists' studio with workshop space, a showroom and retail space featuring regular " how-to" sessions for the community and classes in marketing and entrepreneurship for those who want to make their artistic ventures self-supporting.
Those interested in more information about Red Horse Chaps products or Designing Dreams' schedule of classes can contact Porter at (214) 421-9900, email him at , or drop by Red Horse Chaps at 1409 South Lamar, Suite 102.

In the low key black and white visual style of Hollywood's classic film noir period, Fedora borrows a liberal slice from this genre's hardboiled school of crime fiction, in both attitude and interior. It showcases a menu of classic interpretations of Italian pastas, pizzas, and other traditional dishes inspired by passion and panache of all things Italian.
Fedora is open for lunch and dinner. Hours are Sunday - Wednesday 11am-11pm, and Thursday - Saturday 11am - 2am. Happy hour menu served 2:30 - 5:30pm (pizza and drinks only).
