SAN ANTONIO - A jury sentenced Katrina evacuee Chris Meadoux to life in prison without parole for his capital murder conviction in the deaths of two friends last year.
Meadoux, 17, was found guilty of the shooting and stabbing deaths of Johnny You, 17, and Luis Martinez, 19, in January 2007. You and Martinez were both shot in the head and their throats were slashed.
The jury heard testimony from Meadoux, in a DVD made by police, that he accidentally shot the two and then cut them because he didn't want to leave behind any witnesses. Firefighters found their bodies when responding to a fire at the home where they had been staying.
"Regardless of what they say today, there is no judge than can overrule my god. My son is innocent," Lillian Laraque, Meadoux's mother, said outside the courtroom, the San Antonio Express-News reported Tuesday in its online edition.
Martinez's mother, Betsy Villamil, said she was happy with the verdict.
"This is what we wanted and this is what he deserved," she said. "It still hurts and it's going to hurt for a while."
