LUBBOCK, Texas - A 3-year-old girl died and her 2-year-old sister was in critical condition after they were thrown from a sport utility vehicle in a collision with a patrol car driven by a Lubbock County sheriff's deputy.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Tuesday's accident on FM 2641 near Shallowater occurred when the SUV ran a stop sign and was struck by the patrol car.

Hannah Spoon, of Littlefield, died in the crash and her sister Kyra Nesbitt was in critical condition, the DPS said.

The other five people in the SUV were not seriously injured. The deputy suffered minor injuries.

Hannah's death is the eighth in traffic accidents along a three-mile stretch of the highway in less than three months, all involving the running of stop signs, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported.
