Wrong-way driver triggers fatal crash in Kaufman County

KEMP - Two people are dead and several others were injured in a head-on collision overnight. It happened around 11 p.m. Sunday on Highway 175 near FM 1391 in this Kaufman County community.

Police said a woman was traveling west in the eastbound lanes when her small sport utility vehicle crashed head-on into another car.

The wrong-way driver was removed from the wreckage and pronounced dead a short time later at Gun Barrel City Emergency Center.

The other car, a large sedan, was carrying a family of six. The man driving the car died at the scene. Three children were taken to Children's Medical Center in Dallas by helicopter.

Kemp police said two other victims - an adult and a teenager - went to Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas for treatment.

Everyone in the sedan had been wearing seat belts, police said. No names were released.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Kemp is 40 miles southeast of Dallas.
